NUMEROSITY
March 5, 2004 - April 30, 2004
Opening Reception: Thursday, March 4, 2004, 8pm - 10pm
Corrie Greening's Numerosity focuses on the practicality and accessibility of fine art. Her work challenges standard notions of what art is and how it should be viewed. Building on the dynamic nature of the Lower Level - a bar and performance venue-she has created four site-specific works.
Greening relies on humor, audacity and color. Her focus is on form and function rather than the specific imagery portrayed in her painted and digital constructions. The imagery is conceived out of the necessity for a "skin" and takes a background seat to its "body."
The emphasis of the work is also not on unique objects, but rather on unique arrangements of manifold forms. Each piece has an interactive element and is created by a sum of multiple units. Although the individual unit may be distinct and have the power to stand alone, it has an obvious function in the larger work. Greening invites viewers to "touch the pieces, test them out" and create new forms in the space.
