Thom Heileson's installation Scend is a landscape in motion, using dual video projection to explore the experience of travel by automobile through the American desert. Digitally composited from footage of travel that spans a mile of ascending and descending elevation in Death Valley, the piece experiments with the use of video to evoke a visceral sense of motion, and the often meditative, mesmerizing experience of travel through the desert landscape.

The title Scend - a word describing the lift of a wave, or the movement of a ship on turbulent waters - refers to a ruptured, unsteady quality of consciousness during the drone of this desert travel, as well as a liquid quality that results from the video processing and projection.
