Kate Greiner and Suzy Ummel founded the Capitol Hill Watercolor Society (CHWS) in the spring of 2003. Motivated by their mutual penchant for red wine and colored water they invited other artists participate in the group. The CHWS has since blossomed and, with a touch of watercolor and a lot of society, maintains both admiration and a little animosity for official and rather stuffy circles that dominate the world of their chosen art form.

CHWS has created a collective collage of images, an exquisite corpse, installed around the entire perimeter of the Lower Level in a long, unbroken line. Individual signatures are played out and each artists’ “touch” becomes evident within the limitations of the continuous line. The construction of this sophisticated environment encourages the viewer to engage with the architectural space on multiple levels.
