Tasty Bits & Misfits
EXHIBITION DATES:

OPENING RECEPTION:
Thursday, June 2, 2005, 8pm—10pm
Suzanne Kaufman and Karin Yamagiwa have enormous imaginations. They have developed a series of highly stylized characters, anthropomorphized animals and food particles with bizarre habits that represent both the sweet and dark misfit in all of us. Paintings on wood, canvas, and paper in two and three dimensions explore themes of innocence, loss, love, kinship and alienation.
Kaufman’s works are soft with a muted palate while Yamagiwa incorporates bold lines and solid colors to shape the contours of her figures. Together, their characters create a harmonious balance. They are cute and non-threatening, but at the same time, possess an adult sophistication.
About the Artists:
Suzanne Kaufman was born and raised in the Midwest growing up on healthy doses of Saturday morning cartoons and macaroni and cheese. The creatures that inhabit her worlds draw inspiration from Edward Gorey; Michel Gagné; comics, cartoons, travel and music.
Karin Yamagiwa is a Seattle native and has been crafting as long as she can remember. Her some-of-a-kind artworks of ‘Stumpytown’ were developed from the memories of childhood and the traits of friends and loved ones.
